Grantham (grăn`təm, –thəm), town (1991 pop. 30,700), in the Parts of Kesteven, Lincolnshire, E central England, on the Witham River. Grantham is an agricultural center and railroad junction. Mechanical engineering works produce diesel engines and road rollers. Landmarks include St. Wulfram’s Church, with its 280-ft (85-m) steeple; Angel Inn, where in 1483 Richard III condemned the duke of Buckingham to death; a bronze statue (on St. Peter’s Hill) of Sir Isaac Newton, who attended King’s School in Grantham; and George Hotel, described by Dickens in Nicholas Nickleby. At Grantham in 1643, Oliver Cromwell won his first victory over the royalists.

History
Evidence exists of human presence of the site in the Paleolithic period, 400,000 years ago. Farnham first seems to have become inhabited during the Mesolithic period, around 6000BC, and continued to grow through the Bronze and Iron Ages.
In Roman times the district became a pottery centre due to the plentiful clay of the area. The remains of a pottery, as well as a Roman villa and bath have been found in the vicinity.
It was the Saxons who gave the town its name – Farnham is listed as Fearnhamme in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Fearn refers to the fern and bracken of the land and Hamme to the water meadows. In 688 the West Saxon King Caedwalla donated the district around Farnham to the Church, and to the diocese of Winchester. A Saxon community grew up in the valley by the river. At the time of the Danish invasion in the 9th century there was a battle on the edge of the settlement when Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, routed the invaders.
The Domesday Book records Farnham as a possession of the Bishop of Winchester. The town is midway between Winchester and London and in 1138 Henry de Blois (grandson of William the Conqueror, and brother of King Stephen) started building the Castle to provide accommodation for the Bishop in his frequent journeying between his cathedral and the capital. The castle’s garrison provided a market for farms and small industries in the town, accelerating its growth.
Farnham was eventually granted its charter as a town in 1249 by William de Ralegh, then Bishop of Winchester.
The Blind Bishop’s Steps, a series of steps leading along Castle Street up to the Castle, were originally constructed for Bishop Richard Fox (godfather of Henry VIII).
During the English Civil War the castle was, except for two short periods, in the hands of Parliamentary forces. In 1648 the keep was partially dismantled by the victorious parliamentarians, at the orders of Oliver Cromwell, to make further occupation by garrison impossible. In 1660 the Bishops of Winchester were restored to the adjoining Bishops Palace, which remained their residence until 1927. From 1927 until 1955 it was a residence of the Bishops of the newly created diocese of Guildford. The castle is currently owned by English Heritage.
The Black Death hit Farnham in 1348, killing about 1,300 people, at that time about a third of the population. In 1625 Farnham was again subject to an outbreak of the plague.
King Charles I stayed at Vernon House in Farnham on his way to his trial and execution in London in 1649. Vernon House is now the site of the town library.
Farnham became a successful market town; the author Daniel Defoe wrote that Farnham had the greatest corn-market after London, and describes 1,100 fully laden wagons delivering wheat to the town on market day. During the 17th century other new industries evolved: greenware pottery (a pottery, dating from 1873, still exists on the outskirts of the town), wool and cloth, the processing of wheat into flour, and eventually hops, a key ingredient of beer.
The essayist William Cobbett was born in Farnham in 1763, in a pub called the Jolly Farmer. The pub still stands, and has been renamed the William Cobbett.
The railway arrived in 1848 and, in 1854, neighbouring Aldershot became the “Home of the British Army”. Both events had a significant effect on Farnham. The fast link with London meant city businessmen could think of having a house in the country and still be in close contact with the office; Farnham thereby became an early example of a ‘commuter town’. Also, the railway did not reach Aldershot until 1870; during the intervening period soldiers would be carried by train to Farnham station and then march to Aldershot. Many officers and their families chose to billet in Farnham itself.
In 1895 Farnham Urban District Council was formed. In 1930 the council purchased Farnham Park, a large park which occupies much of the former castle grounds.
In 1901, the population of Farnham was about 14,000. Since the end of the Second World War, Farnham has expanded from a population of about 20,000 to the present 38,000. Of that figure, approximately 15,000 live in the town centre, whilst the remaining 23,000 live in the surrounding suburbs and villages within the town’s administrative boundaries.

8th Arkansas Infantry Battalion, CSA
Company F—“Ashley Light Infantry”
Soldiers of the 1st/8th Arkansas Battalion at Port Hudson

The 8th Arkansas Battalion was sometimes referred to as the 1st Arkansas Battalion, and was also known as Jones’s Battalion.  This unit marched into Port Hudson on November 1, 1862 and was placed under the command of General William Beall, who would be responsible for defending the Confederate center.

The names shown here are those whose Confederate service record mentions that they served at Port Hudson, and it undoubtedly contains errors and omissions.  Most of the records for these soldiers state that he was captured at Port Hudson when the garrison surrendered on July 9, 1863, and if he was an enlisted man, was paroled a few days later.  If he was an officer, he was sent to a Northern prison camp such as Johnson’s Island, Ohio, and most were held captive until the end of the war.  The intent was to show the soldier’s rank and his company as they were at Port Hudson.  The Records column gives information found in service records or other sources such as the Port Hudson Post Hospital Ledger.

Hildreth Family Tree to 1575

Thomas Hildreth

Hildreth Family Association
The Hildreth Family Association (HFA) is organized to primarily serve those with the surname Hildreth, who wish to trace their genealogy. The majority of the many Hildreths in America are descended from Richard Hildreth, believed b. in County Durham,Gainford, England 1605, d. Chelmsford, MA 1693, emigrated to NE circa 1635, and Thomas Hildreth, b.unk and emigrated to New England on or about the same time as Richard, traveled to and settled in Southampton, Long Island and died there in 1657. DNA has shown that they have a common ancestor, but their relationship remains unknown.

Joseph Hildreth
Name:         Joseph Hildreth
Sex:         M
Birth:        1575 in Gainford, Durham, England
Marriage: Sarah Unknown
Death:      1611 in England
Burial:     St. Marys Cemetery, Durham, England

by Marcus Schmöger, 24 September 2001

Durham is a city about 30 km south of Newcastle-upon-Tyne; it has a really magnificent church (a striking Norman cathedral). The flag is a banner-of-arms and shows a red cross (fimbriated white) on black.
Marcus Schmöger, 24 September 2001

The City of Durham has a simple and attractive shield which is widely seen on official notices, sign-posts, litter bins and other street furniture, etc. It is a red cross on a black field, fimbriated white. There is at least one place where this appears as a flag, in the market place outside the Council offices. The flag is severely tattered, being little more than half its original length, but it looks as though it is 1:2.

Note that Durham also gives its name to the county of which it is the ‘capital’. The county has a coat of arms which incorporates what is known as the ‘St Cuthbert’s Cross’. This also appears in other coats of arms, but not in any flags or banners of arms which I have seen, with the possible exception of a rather unsatisfactory flag which was flying at Durham Castle, which is now part of the University of Durham. It was a maroon field with a coat of arms, including separate a motto, stuck in the middle of it – not at all heraldic.

Henry C. Daulton
Born: 7 Apr 1827 Marysville KY USA
Moved to Madera County with the Hildreth Family

HENRY CLAY DAULTON.  Especial interest attaches to the lives of men who, during the adventurous days following the discovery of gold in California, braved the dangers of deserts and mountains and in the midst of perils known and unknown made their difficult way toward the Pacific coast.  Such a man was Henry Clay Daulton, the son of a soldier in the war of 1812, and the grandson of a Revolutionary soldier, from whom he inherited a steadfast courage and fearlessness of character.  The eighth among ten children, he was born at Marysville, Ky., April 7, 1827, and in a childhood accompanied the family to the vicinity of Hannibal, Mo., where he grew to manhood.  By the death of his parents when he was fourteen he was thrown upon his own resources for a livelihood at an age when most boys are unhampered by cares and responsibilities.  Working in the employ of farmers he continued in the home neighborhood until after news had reached him concerning gold in the far west.  Immediately he resolved to seek his fortune in the mines.  April 7, 1850, with a brother, he started across the plains with ox-teams, arriving August 11, in what is now Placerville.  For two years he prospected in northern mines, but deciding after a time he could reap larger profits from a stock business he returned east via Panama to purchase sheep and cattle for a stock ranch.  While en route for home the ship, Republican, was wrecked in a storm and taken into port of Acapulco for repairs, thus delaying him for weeks.  After a tedious delay he arrived at home and at once set about purchasing sheep and cattle.  In 1853 he started across the plains with his stock, being accompanied by Thomas Hildreth, who later founded the town of Hildreth.  The party arrived in Los Angeles early in November 1853, and for a few years he remained in the San Gabriel valley, but later settled on a farm twelve miles northeast of Madera, where he purchased a large tract of government land.
At the San Gabriel mission, Los Angeles County, in 1854, was solemnized the marriage Of Henry C. Daulton and Mary Jane Hildreth, a daughter of Jesse, and sister of Thomas Hildreth, and who had accompanied the party across the plains.  She is still residing at the old homestead in Madera County.  Of her ten children five are living namely:  Mrs. Ida Saxe, of Madera; John F., of Madera; Jonathan who is engaged in the sheep business in Madera County; Mrs. L. Mann of Oakland; and James Williams, living at Imperial, San Diego County.  In 1854 Mr. Daulton was elected justice of the peace of Los Angeles and held the position until his removal from the County.  In 1857 he settled on what is known as the Santa Rita Ranch in Fresno County, and later purchased the present homestead, which he call Shepherd’s Home.  In 1860 he was elected to the office of supervisor of Fresno County, and held the position until 1875, when he declined re-election.  However, three years later he was persuaded to accept the position again and served for one more term.  At one time the American Party nominated him for the senate and he made an excellent race, although the party was numerically weak.  When the subject of organizing Madera County was brought up he became a champion of the movement, and acted as chairman of the commissioners appointed to conduct the election which decided the proposed county division.  At that election, May 29, 1893, he was elected a supervisor, and when the county was organized he was made chairman of the board, which position he was filling at the time of his death. Fraternally he was connected with the Lodge and Encampment of Odd Fellows and the Blue Lodge and Chapter of Masonry.
There are few men whose influence has been felt throughout Madera County in a greater degree that that of Henry C. Daulton, and hi sudden and accidental death was widely mourned.  October 28, 1893 when he was driving home from town, his horse ran away, and he was thrown from the cart, his foot catching in the shaft in such a manner that he was dragged a considerable distance.  When found he was dead.  His untimely death cast a gloom over the community which he had so long honored by his citizenship and whose growth had been so continuously fostered by his enterprise and progressive spirit.

DR. EUGENIUS AUGUSTUS HILDRETH, who has been a most prominent member of
the medical profession of Wheeling since 1888, was born in this city July
10, 1864, and is a son of Dr. E. A. Hildreth.

His grandfather, Ezekiel Hildreth, was a teacher in the Lancasterian
Academy at Wheeling, but retired some years previous to his death, which
occurred in March, 1856. He was born at Sterling, Massachusetts, in 1784,
and married Sally Zane, who was born at Wheeling in 1796, and was a
daughter of Jonathan Zane, who was one of the defenders at the siege of
Fort Henry.

Dr. E. A. Hildreth was born Septembr 13, 1821, and completed a college
education at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, in 1840. He then took up the
study of medicine at the Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio, from
which institution he was graduated in 1844. In 1845 he opened an office at
Wheeling and successfully practiced medicine until his death in 1895. He
was prominent in his profession, and also found time to devote to other
interests. He was a member of the board of education several terms, and
was president of that body in 1879. He was a member of the board of
commissioners of the penitentiary at Moundsville from 1868 to 1872. He
served as a member of the board of examiners of surgeons for appointment
to army service, and later was pension examiner. He was noted as a writer
on atmospheric, meteoric and climatic phenomena, as well as on medical
science. He was a member of the Ohio County Medical Society, the State
Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and an honorary member
of the California Medical Society and the Victoria Institute of Great
Britain. In 1851 Dr. Hildreth married Susan McMechen, who was born in 1824
and was a daughter of Benjamin McMechen. They reared the following
children: Frank C., born in 1852, who was an attorney of Wheeling, and at
the time of his death, in 1895, was serving as cashier of the Commercial
Bank; Benjamin M., born in 1854, who spent his active life in the glass
business and resides at Woodsdale; Sally Zane, wife of William S. Brady,
who resides at Echo Point; Dorrie List, wife of F. G. Krammerer, of
Chicago, who has two children, Eugenius Hildreth and Frances; and Eugenius
A., the subject of this biography. Benjamin M. Hildreth married Kate
Turner in 1874, and they have a son, Eugenius A., who is now a medical
student of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Eugenius A. Hildren was primarily educated in Linsly Institute and
then studied medicine in Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, graduating in 1885, his residence during 1886-7 being the
Brooklyn City Hospital. After taking a special course in New York City, he
returned to Wheeling, where he has practiced since 1888. His office and
residence are at No. 1207 Chapline street. He is a member of the Ohio
County Medical Society, the State Medical Society and the American Medical
Association.

Dr. Hildreth was united in marriage, in 1892, with Jane Neave Brady, and
they have five children: William; Richard; Eugenius A., Jr.; Hugh Brady;
and Mary Caldwell. The Doctor is a Republican in politics, and a member of
the board of education and the board of trade. Dr. and Mrs. Hildreth are
members of St. Matthew’s Protestant Episcopal church, of which his father
was a vestryman.

Ross
1.    Scottish and English (of Norman origin): habitational name for someone from Rots near Caen in Normandy, probably named with the Germanic element rod ‘clearing’. Compare Rhodes. This was the original home of a family de Ros, who were established in Kent in 1130.

2.    Scottish and English: habitational name from any of various places called Ross or Roos(e), deriving the name from Welsh rhós ‘upland’ or moorland, or from a British ancestor of this word, which also had the sense ‘promontory’. This is the sense of the cognate Gaelic word ros. Known sources of the surname include Roos in Humberside (formerly in East Yorkshire) and the region of northern Scotland known as Ross. Other possible sources are Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, Ross in Northumbria (which is on a promontory), and Roose in Lancashire

3.    English and German: from the Germanic personal name Rozzo, a short form of the various compound names with the first element hrod ‘renown’, introduced into England by the Normans in the form Roce.

4.    German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name for a breeder or keeper of horses, from Middle High German ros, German Ross ‘horse’; perhaps also a nickname for someone thought to resemble a horse or a habitational name for someone who lived at a house distinguished by the sign of a horse.

5.    Jewish: Americanized form of Rose 3.

The Starving Time in Virginia
The following is an excerpt from the report of Captain John Smith, “What happened in the first government after the alteration, in the time of Captaine George Piercie, their Governor,” 1609. The spelling has been converted to the modern American form.
The Starving Time

The day before Captain Smith returned for England with the ships, Captain Davis arrived in a small Pinnace, with some sixteen proper men more: To these were added a company from Jamestown, under the command of Captain Sickelmore alias Ratliffe, to inhabit Point Comfort. Captain West, having lost their boats and near half their men among the savages, were returned to Jamestown; for the savages no sooner understood Smith was gone, but they all revolted, and did spoil and murder all they encountered.

Now we were all constrained to live only on Smith had only for his own Company, for the rest had consumed their proportions. And now they had twenty presidents with all their appurtenances: Master Piercie, on new President, was so sick he could neither go nor stand. But ere all was consumed, Captain West and Captain Sickelmore, each with a small ship and thirty or forty men well appointed, sought abroad to trade. Sickelmore upon the confidence of Powhatan, with about thirty others as careless as himself, were all slain; only Jeffrey Shortridge escaped; and Pocahontas the Kings daughter saved a boy called Henry Spillman, that lived many years after, by her means, amongst the Patawomekes. Powhatan still, as he found means, cut off their boats, denied them trade: so that Captain West set sail for England.

Now we all found the loss of Captain Smith, yea his greatest maligners could now curse his loss: as for corn provision and contribution from the savages, we had nothing buy mortal wounds, with clubs and arrows; as for out hogs, hens, goats, sheep, horses, or what lived, our commanders, officers and savages daily consumed them, some small portions we sometimes tasted, till all was devoured; then swords, firearms, pieces, or anything, we traded with the savages, whose cruel fingers were so often imbrewed in our blood, that what with their cruelty, our Governors indiscretion, and the loss of our ships, of five hundred within six months after Captain Smith’s departure, there remained not past sixty men, women and children, most miserable and poor creatures; and those were preserved for the most part part, by roots, herbs, acorns, walnuts, berries, and now and then a little fish: they that had starch in these extremities, made no small use of it; yea, even the very skins of our horses.

Nay, so great was our famine, that a savage we slew and buried, the poorer sort took him up again and ate him; and so did diverse one another boiled and stewed with roots and herbs: And one among the rest did kill his wife, powdered her, and had eaten part of her before it was known; for which he was executed, as he well deserved: now whether she was better roasted, boiled or carbonadoed [broiled], I know not; but of such a dish as powdered wife I never heard of.

This was that time, which still to this day we called the starving time; it was too vile to say, and scarce to be believed, what we endured: but the occasion was own, for want of provident industry and government, and not the barrenness and defect of the country, as is generally supposed; for till then in three years, for the numbers were landed us, though it seemed by the bills of lading sufficient was sent to us, such a glutton is the sea, and such good fellows the mariners; we as little tasted of the great proportion sent us, as they of our want and miseries, yet notwithstanding they ever overswayed and ruled the business, though we endured all that is said, and chiefly lived on what this good country naturally affored.

Yet had we been even in Paradise itself with these Governors, it would not have been much better with us; yet there was amongst us, who had they had the government as Captain Smith appointed, but that they could not maintain it, would surely have kept us from those extremities of miseries. This in ten days more, would have supplanted us all with death.
But God that would not this country should be unplanted, set Sir Thomas Gates, and Sir George Sommers with one hundred and fifty people most happily preserved by the Bermudas to preserve us: strange it is to say how miraculous they were preserved in a leaking ship, as at large you read in the insuing history of those islands.

Kenneth I (a.k.a.Cináed mac Ailpín, Kenneth Mac Alpin, and Kenneth the Hardy) lived from 810 to 858 and was arguably the first King of the Kingdom of Scotland, which he ruled from 843 to 858. At the time he was referred to as King of the Picts. The wider picture in Scotland at the time is set out in our Historical Timeline.

He was son of King Alpin II of Dalriada and succeeded his father to the crown of Dalriada in 839. This effectively made him King of the Scots, whose territory roughly covered modern-day Argyll. Meanwhile, also in 839, the Picts, who until then had controlled all of Scotland north of the Forth and Clyde except for Argyll, suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Vikings. Most of the Pictish nobility was wiped out in the defeat, including King Bridei VI.

Kenneth Mac Alpin had a claim to the Pictish crown through his mother. But his claim was disputed by surviving members of the seven royal houses of the Picts, and Drust X succeeded to the Pictish Crown. Kenneth defeated the Picts in battle in 841: and squeezed between the Scots on one side and the rampaging Vikings on the other, the Picts agreed to a meeting with Mac Alpin at Scone, attended by all claimants to the Pictish Crown.

The alcohol flowed freely at the meeting. Then, in what has since been referred to as Mac Alpin’s treason, Drust and the Pictish nobles were all killed by the Scots: allegedly (and improbably) by having their booby-trapped benches collapsed so Kenneth’s rivals plunged into pits in the floor and impaled themselves on spikes set there for the purpose.

Suddenly there was only one claimant for the Pictish Crown, and Kenneth was crowned King of the Picts and the Scots in 843. He was the first King of the House of Alpin, the dynasty named after his father. Kenneth made his capital at Forteviot, a small village 5 miles south west of today’s Perth. He also moved the religious focus of his kingdom from Iona to Dunkeld, and had St Columba’s remains moved there in 849, perhaps for safe keeping from the continuing Vikings raids.

Mac Alpin continued to fight against Picts who challenged his right to hold their crown, but by 855 his grip on those parts of modern Scotland north of the Clyde and Forth not under the control of the Vikings was relatively secure. He had also created some sort of stability in his relations with the Britons and the Angles who held the lands to the south.

Over time his combined Kingdom of the Picts and Scots came to be referred to as Alba: later know by medieval scholars (rather confusingly) as Albania.

Kenneth I died at Forteviot in 858. apparently of natural causes. He was then buried on the Isle of Iona. He was succeeded by his brother, Donald I.

——————————————————————————————————————————–

Donald I (a.k.a. Domnall mac Ailpín) lived from 812 to 863 and was King of the Picts and Scots from 858 to 863. The wider picture in Scotland at the time is set out in our Historical Timeline.

Donald I became the second King of the Picts and Scots (in effect “King of Scotland”) following the death of his brother, Kenneth I in 858, and was the younger son of King Alpin II of Dalriada.
Donald made less of an impression than his brother. He was described as wanton and you get the sense a playboy prince, a younger son who never expected or perhaps even wanted to become King. He only reigned for five years. He died in Perthshire (accounts differ as to whether in battle or of natural causes) and was buried in the graveyard at Saint Oran’s Chapel on the Isle of Iona.
King Donald I’s main contribution was to complete the task begun by his brother of suppressing any further challenge to the House of Alpin from the Pictish nobility for the Pictish Crown. He also oversaw the introduction of a set of laws known as the Laws of Aedh (or Aed). These included the law of tanistry, under which the successor of a king was elected during his lifetime from members of his family: often a brother or cousin rather than a son. The aim was to ensure that in an age when very few men died old, the succession would pass on to someone old enough and able enough to handle it.
Donald’s successor, Constantine I of Scotland, was elected to succeed him by this method. Constantine was Donald’s nephew, and the son Donald’s predecessor, Kenneth I. Tanistry governed questions of succession to the Scottish Crown until the reign of Malcolm II of Scotland.
——————————————————————————————————————————–

Constantine I (a.k.a. Causantín mac Cináeda) lived from 836 to 877 and was King of the Picts and Scots from 863 to 877. The wider picture in Scotland at the time is set out in our Historical Timeline.

Constantine was the son of King Kenneth I and came to the throne following the death of his uncle, Donald I.
Constantine spent most of his reign fighting to consolidate and expand upon the Kingdom of Scotland created when Kenneth I had brought together the crowns of the Scots and the Picts to form the beginnings of what became known as Alba. To the south he battled against the King of Strathclyde. This culminated when he arranged the death of the King of Strathclyde in 872. He replaced him with his own brother in law, Rhun: effectively making Strathclyde a subordinate kingdom to Alba.
On other fronts Constantine faced constant pressure from the Vikings. In quick succession in the mid 860s Constantine defeated Norse forces led by Olaf the White and by Thorsten the Red.
But in 877, Vikings from Dublin and Yorkshire landed in Fife and established a base from which to raid much of the eastern side of Scotland. King Constantine I of Scotland died in battle against the Norse at Inverdovat, on the outskirts of today’s Newport on Tay in North East Fife. He was buried in the graveyard at Saint Oran’s Chapel on the Isle of Iona. Constantine was briefly succeeded by his brother, King Aedh.
